Move or Make Over: A Disney bedroom for a little princess

"I’m redecorating my daughter’s bedroom. She's six-years-old now and she's a real girlie girl. She loves Disney movies so I am looking to create a room that runs along the Disney theme. Is there anything I can do that would make it feel magical and fit for a princess? I was thinking about a mural on one wall but what would you recommend?"

Decorating a little girl’s room in a Disney theme is a fabulous idea. There are so many colourful and imaginative designs that you can incorporate to make her bedroom captivating and magical. There are some wonderful colours and designs that will work brilliantly in your daughters bedroom and I recommend you include her as much as possible in the design process so she feels excited about her new room.

Colour is so important for children at a young age and it’s important to select shades that will soothe and aid sleep. Colours should not be aggressive as your child will find it very hard to sleep and may not get the best rest possible.

When decorating a young girl’s bedroom in a Disney theme the first colour that comes to mind is pink. Take a look at shades such as Fairy Dust and Beauty Queen from the Crown colourcard. These are soft shades which are ideal to create a true princess room. If you feel these shades are too subtle, then perhaps take a look at deeper options like Cheeky Wink which would look great as a feature wall.

Personally, I love murals with minute detail and artistic demonstration but there are some things to consider, like cost and longevity. For example, your daughter may be mad into Disney at the moment but that could change within a year. If you decide that a mural is out of the question, then perhaps consider stencilling some of her favourite quotes from Disney films on to her bedroom wall instead. You can pick up vinyl or wooden lettering very easily. Add phrases such as "Once Upon a Time" to really evoke the feel of a Disney wonderland.

If you do decide to go for a mural on a feature wall then I would be inclined to paint the other three walls in very subtle tones. Take the dominant colour from the mural and use a lighter version of it on the other walls. This will compliment the mural without taking away from it.

Accessories and other soft furnishing won’t be too hard to find. Perhaps you could bring your daughter to The Disney Store on Grafton Street in Dublin to pick out some bits and pieces for her new room. Make sure that both of you have a clear idea of what you would like so you will save time, energy and potential tears shopping!

I suggest placing a wooden floor in your daughter’s room as it will be the easiest to keep clean. Flooring is a very important aspect of a child’s room as there will no doubt be plenty of spills and splatters that will need to be cleaned away. You can also place a cosy rug on the floor to add a little warmth.

If your daughter likes princesses, as most little girls do, then perhaps consider a small chandelier in her room. These small, decorative lights are relatively inexpensive but will make your daughter feel extra special! Try to use sheer or semi-sheer curtains for your girl's room as this allows the right amount of light to come in. You can also add blinds to the window to keep the light out when it's time for bed.

A decorative box full of dress-up clothes is another must. This creative outlet will give your daughter plenty of reasons to spend time in her newly-decorated bedroom.
