A Cork woman who was once labeled the “most dangerous in America” due to her fight for workers' rights, is to be commemorated this week on the 175th anniversary of her birth. Born Mary Harris and baptised in Cork’s North Cathedral on August 1st, 1837, Mother Jones- as she later became known- was an iconic figure of the trade union struggle in North America during the 19th and early 20th century. She was actively involved in the rights of mineworkers and the poor, along with a leading campaigner against child labour. To celebrate and recognise Mother Jones’ achievements, a festival- including film launch and unveiling of a plaque, designed by local sculptor Mike Wilkins- will take place in Shandon from Tuesday, July 31st to Thursday, August 2nd.
