"I’m looking for somewhere to go on a short weekend trip in Ireland. I love history and culture but I’ll also be bringing my two children who are five and seven along with me. I'd love any suggestions on where you think we should visit and what to do while we are there."

The beautiful town of Drogheda in Co. Louth is a great location for a weekend break and combines some great historical sites with some child- friendly activities. Drogheda is a medieval town and is home to several historic destinations including the 13th Century St. Lawrence’s Gate, Battle of the Boyne and Millmount Museum and Martello Tower. Just a short car trip away is the famous world heritage site – Newgrange. This Neolithic burial ground is packed with history and is a must see on your visit to this part of the world.

For children, there are many activities to keep them busy for the weekend. These include Newgrange Farm and Funtasia Water Park. Newgrange Farm is a huge attraction for children of all ages, offering them the opportunity to experience farm animals up close in the petting farm. The farm also includes a play centre with sand pits, toy tractors and play houses so they are sure to have a fun filled time here. If you are looking for something a little more exhilarating then Funtasia Water Park offers some thrill and excitement as Ireland’s largest indoor water park.

Other activities available in Drogheda and neighbouring areas include golf, swimming, fishing and tennis. There are also some nearby beaches which are perfect for a short and peaceful stroll or if the weather is permitting you can bring the children for a picnic and build sandcastles in Termonfeckin or Bettystown Beach.

If you are an arts lover, the Droichead Arts Centre and TLT offer the very best of national and international arts talent on a regular basis. From well-known comedians to local up-and-coming musicians, these two popular Drogheda venues really do have it all.

After an action-packed day, there are many restaurants which offer the perfect place to relax and unwind with some scrumptious delights. Borzalino's is an Italian restaurant and pizzeria which is renowned for its friendly atmosphere and homemade pizza. Should you want something a little more informal, Darby O’Gill’s serves pub grub such as lasagne, burgers and chips and is sure to make the kids happy.
