Festive spend survey has mixed messages

Despite the ongoing pressures of the tough economic climate, it’s anticipated that Irish consumers will this year regain the title of Europe’s top Christmas spenders, with the average household forking out some €943 over the festive period.

That’s according to new research by Deloitte, which also indicates that prudency will remain a factor this Christmas, with the average household spend down 7.5% on the previous year.

Of the average spend, some €520 will be spent on gifts, €258 on food, and €165 on socialising.

Although the Christmas spend results will be encouraging for retailers, the Deloitte survey also has 36% of respondents of the view that their spending power will deteriorate in 2012, with consumers intent on cutting back on eating out, household goods, entertainment, clothing and holidays.
