Exhibition brewing on Bridge Street

In his debut solo exhibition, Cork artist JG O’Donoghue, one of the founding members of the online interactive gallery, Islander Art will showcase his work at Cork Coffee Roasters on Bridge Street throughout February. With his pieces inspired by the heritage, culture and history of Ireland, the exhibition also features O'Donoghue's Ogham tree illustrations.

The artist explains that in Ogham, an early medieval alphabet used to write old Irish language, each letter is named after a tree. “D or dair, which is oak, E or eadhadh, which is aspen, and F or fearn, which is alder. With each illustration you have the Ogham letter (the horizontal line with lines or dots), the tree it’s named after, then a history of the letter in Irish typography,” he says.

The pieces represent the Ogham alphabet from the seventh century through to the 16th century, and like all of O’Donoghue's work, are done in a distinctive style of pen illustration and coloured ink paintings.
